Customer: My cat is already ill with a fever and is under my vets care. I won''t get him in til tomorrow, but I just discovered that he is eating his cat litter. I use the crystals. I don''t now long he has been doing this or how much he has eaten in the past. Is this poisonous to him?

Cat litter is not poisonous it is a very inert substance so eating small amounts will do no harm, although cats that eat a lot may get obstructions in their intestinal tracts.
A cat that suddenly starts eating litter is almost always sick in some way. For example cats with anemia will sometimes eat litter, I am not sure why they do it. I have also known cats with kidney disease or feline leukemia eat litter sometimes as well.
Cats on poor diets may also eat their litter and some cats can get a compulsive behaviour syndrome which would make them do the same thing.
