Customer Question

How can you tell if a kitten is blind? He is 3 1/2 weeks old and eyes are open, but he is startled so easily even by his mother when she gets in the box to nurse him. He doesn't even know which way to get to her when she is in there with him.

It's difficult to tell in a kitten this age because they still don't see well. You will be able to judge his ability to visualize in another 3 or 4 weeks. Right now he sees, but things are blurry and he can't judge things at a distance. When he's about 6 weeks old, you can purchase either a kitty teaser or a laser pointer. Both of those are excellent toys for kittens and they love to play with them. You will be able to tell if he is seeing or not as he tracks the toys....also, having balls to play with or little catnip mice that he can toss around will allow you to judge his handicap - if any. If you shine a light in his eyes, the pupils should contract with contact with light. If they do not, you should probably have a vet examine him as that is definitely not normal.
