Thank you for waiting. While of course it's possible that Max injured himself, whenever we see swelling in this area, we suspect a problem with the bird's crop (where food passes through on the way to the stomach). However, there are many different types of crop conditions that could be causing this. If there's an infection of the crop, antibiotics would be needed. An impaction may need to be removed surgically. You can try massaging the crop. Sometimes that can get things moving again. To do that, you would have to hold Max with his head down so that he wouldn't aspirate anything that comes up. Some people are comfortable doing this, but I don't personally recommend it because of the risks.

There is also a condition called sour crop that would require medical treatment. A drug called Nystatin is often prescribed. Because there are so many possibilities, you'll really need a vet to diagnose this. There are many home remedies available online, but I can't recommend them because most are ineffective, and some are downright dangerous. Sometimes it helps to withhold all food for 24 hours, but provide plenty of water. Since it would be hard to find a vet today, you may want to try this. This site has directories that will help you find an avian vet:

http://www.avianweb.com/recommendedvets.htm

If you have more questions, just let me know. I'm glad to help. I hope Max will be fine.

I found my experience with you to be very positive. Not only did the vet answer my question thoroughly, he left me with a better knowledge to follow up with my vet.

I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there.
