I have chicks dying from 1 week to 4 weeks of age there

Customer Question
I have chicks dying...

I have chicks dying from 1 week to 4 weeks of age there seems to be no obvious symtoms

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the bird?

I do not vacinate the chicks and i first thought that it could be mareks disease but it apeares this affects older birds ihave checked for mites and have not found any.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. You're correc to recognize that Marek's is unusual earlier than 4 weeks of age. Most chickens are 4-14 weeks of age but I've diagnosed Marek's in older birds as well. Please see here for more: http://www.birdhealth.com.au/mareks-disease

Because you're not seeing obvious symptoms other than deaths, it's essential that a badly ill chick is sacrificed or a newly dead chick is refrigerated (not frozen) and then necropsied in order to determine cause of death. While this may not be important to determine in a small pet flock, it's important practice in large-scale production operations. Any vet can arrange to have a necropsy performed but you may find it more cost effective through your county poultry extension office or county animal disease diagnostic laboratory if you're fortunate to have such a laboratory where you live. The pathology service of a veterinary school teaching hospital is another good resource.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

I found my experience with you to be very positive. Not only did the vet answer my question thoroughly, he left me with a better knowledge to follow up with my vet.

I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there.

Alice H.Jacksonville, Fl.
