I have an Orange Wing Amazon appox. 37
Years old, she was a rescue animal, great
Attitude not a talker but koos a lot. She has been pushing a grape type gland out at times
When she poops.... I have read some to know that unless she retracts it, with clean finger I should push back in, as I've done... seems to be occurring more lately, living in Springfield
Illinois, we currently do not have an Avian Vet. Thoughts please

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. You appear to be describing cloacal (vent) prolapse which can be caused by excessive straining: oviductal disease (salpingitis, egg binding), increased intra-coelomic (intra-"abdominal") pressure due to fluid accumulation or enlargement of organs, cloacal disease (cloacoliths/stones, cloacitis/inflammation of the cloaca, internal papilloma disease), or constipation or diarrhea. It may also be related to loss of cloacal tone as a result of spinal cord disease or chronic trauma.

The intial treatment consists of strabilizing my patient (if required), reducing the prolapse, holding it in place and treating any swelling and damage to the cloacal mucosa until the etiology can be determined. I understand your logistical constraints, however. Please see here for an avian vet near you: www.aav.org/ You can replace the prolapse with moistened cotton tip applicators and then instill 1-2 mL of silver sulphadiazine cream which has both a soothing and an antibacterial effect. An avian vet is likely to place one or two vertical mattress sutures on both sides of the vent in order to reduce the size of the vent opening.

The cause of the prolpase is identified through a thorough history and physical examination and diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests, cloacal culture, whole body X-rays or cloacal endoscopy with or without biopsy. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

What Customers are Saying:

Thank you so much!!! I love this service. It has given me peace of mind and extremely valuable information at an affordable price 24/7 to care for my beloved pets. THANK YOU

LindaCenterreach, NY

I found my experience with you to be very positive. Not only did the vet answer my question thoroughly, he left me with a better knowledge to follow up with my vet.

MarilouEast Taunton, MA

I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there.

Alice H.Jacksonville, Fl.
