I see slightly labored breathing and mouth breathing

Customer Question
I see slightly labored...

I see slightly labored breathing and mouth breathing occasionaly. This is my bird who always sneezes and tends to have a dirty nose. Have been giving tylan for 2 days on advice of chicken breeder freind. Now noticing improved breathing but she seems tired. wondering if the drug makes them drowsey. eating, drinking, pooping is fine. red comb, but she hasnt laid for several months probably due to high heat in our area. she is an18 month old brahma.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help your bird. What is the bird's name?

Biffle

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Biffle?

I think I said it all.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. There's a dirth of information concerning adverse effects of tylosin in birds. In my experience, most commonly only pain and local reactions at intramuscular injection sites are seen.

Please note that in any case of respiratory illness, it's important to know if you're dealing with a viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic disease. The treatment for one disease may be ineffective or even harmful for others. To make a diagnosis, an avian vet (please see here: www.aav.org) will perform several tests including bacterial cultures of the airways, blood tests, and necropsies of dead birds if they're available. Dead birds should be refrigerated - not frozen – until they can be necropsied. Microscopic evaluation of affected tissues is helpful and can be performed at a diagnostic laboratory such as a county animal disease diagnostic laboratory. A fecal test for parasites also should be done. Attempts to isolate virus may be required. Respiratory infections in poultry have several causes but outward signs may appear similar to the flock owner.

Presumptive therapy with the other the counter Tylan-50 and dosed at 5 - 15 mg per pound of body weight intramuscularly into the breast muscle once daily for 5-7 days can be helpful if the infection is due to the common avian mycoplasmosis or chicken coryza (Haemophilus paragallinarum). Tylosin is the only remaining over the counter systemic antibiotic allowed by the FDA to be used by caretakers. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

I found my experience with you to be very positive. Not only did the vet answer my question thoroughly, he left me with a better knowledge to follow up with my vet.

I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there.
