A person who cannot sue a third party who was not involved in the accident, merely because he was driving as a favor to that person at the time of the accident. If she caused the accident, her recourse is with her insurance company. She can't make you pay when you weren't even there and in no way caused the accident. You have no liability, based on the facts you provided. You probably don't need a defense attorney.
I'm not clear on why you're thinking about withholding money from the check you give this person every month, but if the check is for rent, nothing you've said would give you a basis for withholding it. If you don't pay in full, she would be able to have you evicted.
