VerifiedThe situation that happened here is what we call a "chain collision." If the evidence proves that your son's car was hit in the rear and pushed into the car in front of him, then he should not have any legal liability.
In the unlikely event he is found liable and a judgment is entered against him for more than the amount of his insurance policy, his personal assets would be at risk. That would include any assets he has at the time the judgment is entered, or even assets he acquires later, until the judgment is satisfied.
In the real world, however, unless someone's injuries are catastrophic, lawyers usually accept the limits of the insurance policy. They don't want to be bothered going after people's assets unless there are a lot of assets and a very large judgment.
Your son's insurance company will appoint a lawyer to represent him, and that lawyer will keep your son advised as to whether there is a risk of an excess judgment against him.
