5 month old with respiratory rate running between 40-50

Customer Question
breaths per minute when falling...
5 month old with respiratory rate running between 40-50 breaths per minute when falling asleep or first part of sleep. Can run upwards of 60. Will get as low as 30 in deep sleep. Has been with head congestion for 7 weeks. Wakes up coughing terrible despite sleeping at 20-30 degree angle. Get some thick mucus (mostly clear) out but not much.ER said ok a few weeks ago and did blood work and X-ray of lungs. The neck area seems to be sinking in. Is this normal? Just feel like he is struggling. He is happy. Good color. Sat rate was over 90 when in ER and he has been about the same. Plan to see an ENT in a week or so.Not sure if we are over reacting or if there really is a problem.

Hi, If not having febrile episodes and colour, tests are clear, try finding cause for weight loss. Otherwise just wait for maturity of nerves and this mostly overactive respiratory drive will come round. Sleep breathing rate and normal sleep stretches also exclude any lung pathology.

Please try removing excess secretion by inverting position head low on tummy (empty stomach) on your stretched legs thumping over upper back few minutes.

Good luck.

He also has Laryngomalacia

Pediatrician believes weight loss is because of being sick for 7 weeks plus he has become more active
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
You don’t believe he is in some type of respiratory distress
Pediatrician: Dr. Yogindra Vasavada, Pediatrician replied 2 months ago

Another issue of lack of full maturity. May contribute to rapid breathing during waking period. Please consider starting semisolid supplement early.
