My little boy is two years old. He fell off a climbing

Customer Question

Hello, my little boy is two years old. He fell off a climbing frame, cried and then was absolutely fine for the rest of the day and evening. The next morning he couldn't put any weight at all on his leg, he buckles to the floor when he tries. I took him to the hospital- At the hospital no fractures appeared on his x ray. However he keeps pointing to the same place on his knee that is hurting him, even though he is crawling and jumping around on his knees with no discomfort- but will not put any weight on his leg?? I'm really confused and worried about what to do. Any advice greatly received. Thank you

Thank you for your question.
I am Dr. Su S.
I will try my best to help you.

Is there any swelling, redness?

At which point of knee exactly?

What treatment was given in the hospital?

Hello again,
I was waiting for response from you.
I am very sorry for his symptoms.
As X ray did not find any fracture, there is no bony injury.
It can be a soft tissue injury.
Pain may increase after sometime.
It can take sometime to heal.
Please try to keep the knee at rest now.
You can apply ice.
Ice needs to be applied after wrapping in a towel.
Please do not apply directly.
It can be applied several times a day.
You can give him tylenol or motrin.
Those will help to reduce the pain.
If the symptom continues, I would advise to get him examined by an orthopedic doctor.
Sometimes, ligament or cartilage injury can be there.
This may not come up in X ray.
MRI of knee can be taken.
I hope this information will be helpful.

Thanks for your reply, I was expecting an email to let me know you had replied. I don't know what tylenol or motrin is- not available in U.K I don't think. I've since taken him back to the hospital. No swelling or redness, they have put his leg into a plaster as they suspect toddler fracture even though nothing showed on the second x ray. Thanks

You are welcome. Immobilization would help in healing. Tylenol is paracetamol in UK. Motrin is ibuprofen. Wish him early recovery.
