I need help. I started toilet training my 3 year last week.

Customer Question

I need help. I started toilet training my 3 year last week. He is completely bladder trained (dry at night) and can pull his pants up and down to go to the toilet. The issue is poos. He is completely withholding poos to the point where we had to give him a suppository Saturday night (5 days of no poo and in agony) he poord his pants 15 minutes later. He runs around saying 'sore yucky' 'sore tummy' and I know he has to poo as he is soiling a little bit in his pants. I have given back his nappy in the hope he does a poo but he still won't poo with or without nappy. Before toilet training there was no constipation etc. very regular and healthy poos. Please help me. What do I do? I have been giving an OTC laxative everyday to help

Thank you for the input.
Fissure, constipation often cause such problem.
As he was examined by doctor & he does not have those problems, it will pass away.
Many children have this problem.
When you are at home around your baby, you can avoid using pull up.
At the usual time of poo, let him sit in the toilet.
Balloon or blowing trumpet can be given to blow while he sits on the toilet.
Blowing will produce pressure, thus can help to make an urge to pass stool while he is on the potty.
You can buy for him Potty toy which he can enjoy and play with it only when he will sit in the potty.
Give him some favorite picture books or toys while sitting in potty.
Tell him such stories at that time which he likes most or play his favorite music.
It may take some time to adjust.
I feel that you should go slowly instead of drastic measures.
Please continue to give him plenty of fluid, fresh fruits & vegetables to avoid constipation.

Children can have such problems when they learn new things & it passes away gradually.
I hope this information will be helpful.

but what do I say to him when he says 'sore bottom' and I know he's withholding a poo and he won't go?
Also, do I put him in undies or nappies?
Expert:  Dr. Su S. replied 11 months ago.

You can put him in undies.

You can tell him to sit in potty when he complains of soreness.

You can tell him when he will sit & pass stool the soreness will go away.

He will slowly overcome the problem.
