Customer Question

My five year old son has had fever the last 4 days. It's spikes and ranges as high as 102-104. It is being controlled with motrin and occasionally a tylenol boost if it spikes up before the next motrin is due. Our pediatrician says it's a virus that needs to run its course and does not show any symptoms of anything else. How long will this last? Today is his 4th day. Looking for a second opinion. Thanks

Thank you for the input.
Viral fever usually lasts for 3-5 days.
Often it is over in a week.
If the fever does not subsides in next 1-2 days, I would advise to take an examination by doctor again.
He can look for signs of bacterial infection.
Most healthy children can tolerate 102-103 degrees of fever.
Sometimes we can wait with higher temperature also, if the child does not have any other symptom & looks healthy.
Ibuprofen can be repeated 3 -4 times, it can be given 6-8 hourly.
Acetaminophen can be given 4-6 hourly but not to exceed 5 doses.
You can also give lukewarm bath or sponging.
Please give plenty of fluid to keep good hydration.
I hope this information will be helpful.

As the fever is continuing, he should take rest & remain at home.
You can have him reviewed by doctor tomorrow if the fever continues to run high.
