My son has a lot of bruising and it's starting to worry me.

Customer Question

My son has a lot of bruising and it's starting to worry me. He and his brother rough-house quite a bit during the day, but he has bruising on his shins, knee, elbows and bony parts of his arm. He fell yesterday on the fire place and has a huge bruise on his knee. He is 5 years old, and weighs around 53 lbs. He has a great appetite, and seems healthy besides just the run of the mill things he catches at preschool (so far hand foot and mouth, roseola, stomach flu, and an ear infection) He is active, and playful. The busing is what worries me. I am worried that this is a sign of leukemia. My cousin had it, and I worry about it all the time with him. Should I be concerned about his busing?

Thank you for your question.

I am Dr. Su S. and I will try my best to help you.

The bruise is due to extravasation of blood.

This may take some time to get absorbed.

Some children get easy bruising, often the cause is not found.

Children get it more easily from any trivial trauma during play.

Bruising is worrisome when it is accompanied by other symptoms like bleeding from nose, gut or with urine, frequent large ones, swelling of lymph glands etc.

You can observe it.

If it increases in size or is accompanied by other symptoms you should take him to doctor.

Doctor can check blood for platelets, coagulation factors, bleeding disorder etc.

Vitamin deficiency can be a cause.

Please give him fresh fruit, vegetables abundantly.

I hope this information will be helpful.

the huge bruise on his knee from falling on the fire place isn't something to worry about? I don't think he's ever had a bruise this large.

He did have about 4 days of a 104 degree fever 3 months ago, with no explanation or other symptoms but his pediatrician wasn't concerned. Said it was probably just a virus.

Usually bruise is not worrying.

As it is huge, you can take him to doctor.

If doctor feels necessary, he can take a blood test.
