Customer Question

My daughter is 17 and had her galbladder removed in April. It was an emergency surgery. Never had issues before that day. Since then she has gained 30 pounds. Bloodwork is all normal for thyroid.

Thank you for your question.

I am Dr. Su S. and I will try my best to help you.

Did she have any other test besides thyroid?

Does she have any other symptom?

Does she take any other regular medicine?

Did she have any psychological issues?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
she had routine blood work done and all was normal. She's on birth control but the doctor feels the dose is low enough that wouldn't cause weight gain. No psychological issues but very close to it if keeps gaining I'm sure.

Thank you for the input & picture.
Weight gain can occur from a few causes.
In low thyroid state there can be weight gain.
But her tests were normal.
Other causes of weight gain are cushing's disease, overeating, polycystic ovary.
Anxiety, depression can also cause weight gain.
Low dose pill may not be the cause.
If no apparent cause is detected, then she needs to control calorie intake.
Usually a calorie intake of 1200 - 1500 is advised when one plans to lose weight with an aim not to lose weight suddenly but gradually & to maintain it.
A dietitian can be involved in planning diet.
Frequency of exercise/ walk can be increased to 5 times a week.
I hope this information will be helpful.

Polycystic ovary is a condition where there are multiple cysts in the ovary.
