Customer Question

Tonight my husband got my son out of the bath, and noticed that his anus was bright red. He questioned him as to why it was so red- was he hurting, did he not wipe completely, itching, etc? All to which he said no. After some prying and finally getting him to admit, it turns out he was sticking his finger up his anus. He said this isn't the first time he's done it. As a nurse, I was immediately sickened to my stomach at the thought that maybe someone was doing something sexual to him- but he insisted no one told him to try it and that no one has touched him inappropriately. I explained to him that I am not upset with him, but that this is very poor hygiene, and that he cannot do that because he could harm himself and could also make himself sick. He seems to understand and is obviously very embarrassed. He said he did it because it felt good. I'm very disturbed by all of this, and I am wondering what your thoughts are, on if this is normal behavior? He is not mentally or physically disabled, just a very normal 8 year old boy.

Thank you for your question.

I am Dr. Su S. and I will try my best to help you.

You are right that it is not a normal behavior.

You have explained it thoroughly.

As a nurse you can have a watch and see whether he repeats it or not.

If you suspect that he is continuing, then you should consult a pediatric psychologist.

I hope this information will be helpful.

Do you have any thoughts as to what could cause such behavior? Is this something that is ever typical in children this age, or completely abnormal?
Expert:  Dr. Su S. replied 1 year ago.

It can be that he has seen in the TV or heard from friend.

Abuse is a possibility as you know.

If he has itching from pinworm, he can put fingers there.

It is not completely abnormal but it can happen.

We should search for the reason for such activity.
