Customer Question

Every time my daughter has been sick (cold) she gets a very phlegmy non stop cough day and night. It runs its course and goes away and she will be fine for weeks or months (generally ruling out allergies). She's had both her tonsils & adenoids removed and has been tested for both asthma and other allergies. However, she continues to cough so much when she gets a basic cold that she vomits. We've tried nasal washed, honey, tea, etc. nothing helps. What could be causing such a disturbing (for the whole family:( cough??? And what would you suggest? I am looking for advice outside the box!

Hello, Excessive secretion is the cause of such cough and would benefit from postural drainage, whereby when on empty stomach, she should be kept slanting upside down head low, and upper back thumped to clear the secretion easily. If X ray chest is clear during an attack, major infection is ruled out.

If not putting on weight and having wheeze, an endoscopy of airways is required. She may have mucus plugs or even some small foreign body lodged inside.

if I understand, don't prop her head up but actually slant her while she sleeps with her feet up and her head down? If she is thriving weight wise and doesn't wheeze is it still indicated to do a chest X-ray?

No need for endoscopy test if there are no chest signs found by clinician. Repeated cough though requires an X ray plain film.

Few minutes of such drainage posture will ease in bringing out excessive secretions. This practice should continue even when she is well.

Repeated cough requires X-ray even when followed by weeks or months of perfect health??
Expert:  Dr. Yogindra Vasavada replied 2 years ago.

3-4 attacks a year, responding to usual care and getting cured within a week can not be called repeated attacks and X ray study is not required.
