You are very knowledgeable regarding sleep problems and I know you have tried everything. You also recognize that the frequent travel is a possible cause of sleep difficulties (and I agree with that). I have a suggestion for a behavior plan that involves rewards. First, get him a big boy bed (a junior bed which is close to the ground) and let him choose some fancy sheets, pillows and comforter (a theme which he enjoys). Do not put the crib away yet. Let him choose...big boy bed or crib. Have the choice available for many months until he always chooses big boy bed.
Then every time he falls asleep without you in bed with him, he gets a reward in the morning. You should keep a special bag or box near the bed. He should find his reward when he wakes after going to sleep on his own. The reward can be a little one such as a matchbox car, stickers, books, little stuffed animals (whatever is motivating to him). As he gets older you can switch to tokens which can be traded for a bigger reward.
I hope this new idea is helpful. I know it can take a long while to turn sleep problems around.
