The tantrums and crying that often accompany children during the period known as "the terrible twos" doesn't end at age three.

Three year olds have not yet developed enough logical understanding nor have they yet developed self-control.

They are also not yet skilled enough verbally to make themselves clearly understood.

Therefore it is up to the parents to reach out in understanding the needs of their young toddlers.

Your son needs a great deal of patience. It is essential for both of you to remain calm. He is not misbehaving. He is just frustrated and perhaps a bit frightened at the thought of being alone in his room at bedtime.

Since he is calling for his daddy, you may want to go in and reassure him and give him some hugs instead of your wife.

You might be able to distract him with a favorite toy, or a snack, or drink.

Hold him close to you until he calms down, gently but firmly.

Don't punish him or yell at him for his tantrums.

Reward and compliment him for his good behavior, however, and tell him how proud you are of him.

Finally, there are times to just ignore his tantrums and let him know that these cries for attention, when nothing is wrong, don't deserve attention. He must learn that having a screaming outburst when there is no cause, will just be ignored. He will eventually learn how to verbalize any real needs or fears without resorting to this tactic.
