how old should a baby sleep on his/her own?

Ask Eleanor :

Hello and thank you for your question. It is really a matter of personal preference. Some mothers prefer to keep their newborn infant in a bassinet or cradle in their bedroom for convenience and closeness and safety. The baby usually outgrows these by the time they are 3 months old, when he/she will need to sleep in their crib. Sometimes the baby will have a hard time adjusting to a crib after having slept in a bassinet or cradle. Many parents put their infants in a crib from the beginning and the babies do fine. Never put blankets in the crib with your baby as they could smother. Instead, your may swaddle them and/or buy an incline wedge for the crib. It is important to always be within hearing distance of you baby, so if their crib is in another room, leave the doors open or use a baby monitor. I will add that while it is tempting, it is very dangerous to let your baby sleep in the bed with you as you could roll over and smother him/her. I hope this answer is helpful. Chat back if you have any questions. Take care, Eleanor
