Customer Question

In one essay from the textbook, “TV Watching—the Top Environmental Hazard for Children” Todd Huffman declares that our teenagers are “adrift in one of the most crude, brutal, explicitly sexualized popular cultures in the history of the world” (p. 728). He connects overly sexualized media content with risky behavior resulting in teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. It is important to prevent this risky behavior. What solutions can you propose to prevent or decrease teenagers’ risky behavior? What sources would you consult to find experts’ ideas for solutions?

Expert:  proexpert37 replied 5 years ago. order to prevent the risky behavior of teens, parents must keep the lines of communication open. Teach the children from a young age to manifest respect. Also, when the children become teens, they must accept rules and regulations as well as parental imposed boundaries and be accepting of consequences when rules are broken. Additionally, teens must not have too much ample time on their hands. That is when the problems occur. They need to be kept involved in sports, school clubs, church activities, service organizations. Also, parents must know who their teens friends are and the teens parents if at all possible. Furthermore, openly discuss risky and sexualized behavior with teens. Parents should not allow their teen daughters to dress sexy. Parents should keep tabs on the whereabouts of their teens as well. Teens are not adults and still need proper guidance. To find out further advice, talk to parents of other teens. Talk to a psychologist who specializes in adolescent behavior. Even the high school counselor can provide insight. Even check out various parenting websites and there are hundreds of professional posts that provide expert opinions.
