My 5 year old tantrums a lot when he does not get his way.

Resolved Question:

My 5 year old tantrums a lot when he does not get his way. The social worker I am working with suggests Ritalin. What do the experts say?

Hello and thank you for consulting JA,

If he has the symptoms of ADHD, then Ritalin might be appropriate. For tantrums something like Risperdal would be tried. Wait for the neurobehaviorist to give you an accurate diagnosis.

He is too young for a diagnosis of ADHD. He is only 5.

Generally the diagnosis is not made until 7 years old. But if his symptoms are severe it may be made sooner.
