My 13 year old granddaughter is becoming quite a handful.

Customer Question

My 13 year old granddaughter is becoming quite a handful. Backtalk, being disrespectful, lying, etc. Her mom is just about at her wits end. I am trying to find some resouces, books, cds, dvds, etc. that could give us some helpful advice on effective methods of discipline. Looked at the reviews on a set of dvds called the Total Transformation, had very mixed reviews. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Your granddaughter sounds as though she is starting what some would consider normal "teen" behavior. However, taking things away is counter productive. Grounding doesn't work. It will become a battle of the wills. There is a book that I use in my practice in fact I always have several copies on hand for parents of teens. It's called "Surviving your adolescents" by Thomas Phelan. It is a great book that gives your concrete ways to get through these rough years. It's available at any bookstore or online.
