Children are born with an innate curiosity, they have wonder about even the smallest things. They question the world around them, and want to know how things work, why things are the way they are, and can ask tons of questions even about the smallest things. A ladybug can hold a child's attention, a rain shower can be an amazing occurrence.

When we grow up, we are sometimes beaten down by the world, work, other people, and just life in general, and we forget what it means to look at the world from the eyes of a child.

When people talk about killing a child's spirit, they mean taking away that curiosity, that innocence, and that desire to wander and wonder about the world. This can be done by treating them badly, abusing them, killing their joy, not giving them attention, or making them feel they are stupid or worthless. Even a parent that simply just does not give their child attention, or feed their intelligence could be guilty of this. But it mostly pertains to people that put kids down, or treat them badly.
