Resolved Question:

My stomach is hugh, I am retaining water. No water pill has helped. I have extreme difficulty breathing. I do use oxygen at night. I have had every test known to modern science, and nothing has been found wrong with me. Yet I have extreme difficulty breathing and am filled with water.

Dr. David :

Hello, this is Dr. David. I have read your question and am ready to help.

Dr. David :

I am so sorry to hear about your situation. are you worried about having cancer? is that why you are writing me here at the Oncology portion of Just Answers?

Dr. David :

Tell me about the imaging testing you have had. have you had CT scans? which part of your body?

Customer:

Have CT scans on stomach area, have had xrays, colonoscopy, endoscopy, swallowed a camera, I cannot remember all the tests

Customer:

Not worried about cancer, this website sent me here.

Dr. David :

some things which can cause water retention which are overlooked are problems with the hormone regulation of water levels. kidney hormones which are secreted called aldosterone. Have them check your kidney steroid levels and aldosterone levels and urine sodium and potassium levels. a small tumor in the adrenal gland can make too much aldosterone which causes you to keep too much sodium and waste too much potassium causing you to retain water.

Dr. David :

another problem could be too much cortisol, another steroid. these levels can be checked.

Dr. David :

thyroid hormones are often overlooked and should be checked because problems with them are often overlooked.

Dr. David :

and they can be easily fixed.

Dr. David :

you should also see a kidney specialist and get a 24 hour urine collection kidney test to see what your kidneys are putting out and see if they are working properly. your kidneys do all of the water and sodium regulation in your body. if they hold onto sodium, you will retain water.

Dr. David :

let me know if these ideas help.
