Customer Question
I have a 2006...

I have a 2006 Buick Lucerne 3800 engine. No spark on cyl 4. I've replaced coil, spark plug, wires, injector, has good compression. Just no spark.

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked all the fuses? Do you have a wiring diagram?

I've checked fuses and seem fine.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Lucerne yourself? What have you tried so far?

I've replaced spark plugs, wires, ICM, still no luck

Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I replaced the coil as well as the ICM module
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

ok, it still lacks spark to number 4

Ask Your Own Oldsmobile Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
There is spark but it's too weak. At idle it misfires.
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

if you remove the wire from the coil for number 4 cylinder, does spark arc down the side of the coil

Ask Your Own Oldsmobile Question
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

while the engine is running

Faintly
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Doesn't necessarily arc, I can plug a spark plug on the wire and see spark but it's very faint. Not as strong as other cylinders
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

ok, then it is producing spark.

have you checked the wire to the plug???

Roy

replaced them with new wires
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
have tried multiple wires, coils, ICM modules and just can't get good spark off of cylinder 4
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
At times it does not spark at all, sometimes it faintly sparks
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

ok, let me check

Weird problem, have not run into this before
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

is the connector to the icm in good shape. no damaged or bent pins??

Roy

Ask Your Own Oldsmobile Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I've actually replaced it as well. Went to salvage yard and got another connector with another ICM module. The original conector had a pin that was darker than the others. Not sure if it was a little corrosion or burn
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

ok, good.

the only other thing I can think of is the trigger for the crank sensor.

check the trigger wheel that the crank sensor runs across. if it is damaged or oil soaked it can effect the signal to the icm for the command to fire number 4

Roy

Do you have a picture of te trigger wheel ?
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

I will see but all you have to do is look at the harmonic balancer and the wheel is behind it

Roy, I removed harmonic balancer today to inspect ring wheel and it was fine. I also replaced crank position sensor since I was already there, still missfire on cyl 4. Any other ideas ?
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

is there spark on the other wire at that coil???

They where removed from another vehicle. I have 3 different ones and all have the same symptoms
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

all used???

Ask Your Own Oldsmobile Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Correct
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

you need to start with new pieces. get a new coil set and the icm and go from there.

Roy

Ask Your Own Oldsmobile Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I seriously doubt 3 different ICMs and sets of coils would be bad and show the same symptom. I don't want to spend extra money on parts that I don't need. I would agree with you if they showed different symptoms, but to have the same symptoms with all 3 indicated to me that's not the problem, thoughts ?
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

I hear you. you still need to start with new parts not used.

Roy

After replacing ICM, I unplugged cyl 4 wire from coil. It sparked and now car won’t start
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

ok, you now have spark at number 4

are you sure the connector is good and tight?? all terminals clean and not damaged??

Connectors look good. I have no spark whatsoever now
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

ok the only thing you touched is the module and coils. even though you have a new module, remove it and have it tested at a parts store. they do this for free.

Roy

Ask Your Own Oldsmobile Question

Does the module have a fuse / relay ?
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I do have power there. I’m replacing crank sensor again. Maybe that’s the issue.
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I put the old ICM back on and it won’t start. I have zero spark now
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

ok

Replaced crank sensor, fired right up. I’m still having a misfire in cylinder 4. However, I do have spark now, on all cylinders.
Oldsmobile Mechanic: roybelding, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

ok, then next thing I would do is check the compression
