I am sorry to hear about your problem, and I can understand how uncomfortable you may be feeling, but hopefully, we can resolve this.

During the menstrual cycle, your hormones make the lining of the uterus thicker and spongy, preparing it for pregnancy. The blood supply to the uterus also increases.

Also, an egg from the ovary is released. This process of releasing an egg is called ovulation.

If you don't become pregnant, your periods start about two weeks after you ovulate. The lining of the uterus breaks down and falls away, along with some blood & tissue. This is called the menstrual cycle.

Most women have menstrual periods that last four to seven days. A woman's period usually occurs every 28 days, but regular menstrual cycles can range from 21 to 35 days.

Normal menstrual bleeding lasts for 3-7 days.

The symptoms you have described of bleeding for about eight days with on-and-off menstruation can be due to various causes.

The most common causes are- stress, being an overweight or underweight, imbalance of hormones, polycystic ovarian syndrome/estrogen dominance, and uterine abnormalities (fibroids/cysts/polyps/endometriosis).

A pelvic exam is required to rule out uterine abnormality, a cervical polyp or fibroid, or uterine infection. You may need clinical examination and testing for thyroid function and other hormone levels. You may also need an ultrasound to evaluate the uterus, the ovaries, and the fallopian tubes.

So I advise you to go to urgent care/make an early appointment with your gynecologist for the tests and clinical examination to determine the root cause. Then, treatment will be done accordingly.

There are medications called hemostatic drugs, such as tranexamic acid and other hormonal pills, to stop the prolonged bleeding prescribed by your doctor.

Your doctor may place an IUD inside your uterus, slowly releasing the medication into your body. It is called a Hormone-releasing intrauterine device (IUD). It releases a small amount of progestogen, which reduces the thickness of the lining of your uterus.

When to go to the Emergency Room:

The general rule of thumb is that if someone soaks through two pads or tampons in one hour for two hours in a row, then there is a need to go to ER to control this heavy bleeding.

You may need to go to the emergency room (ER) if you have heavy bleeding and clots.

Other symptoms to be noted that may require ER visit are:

-Dizziness

--Extreme fatigue

-Low blood pressure

-Increased pulse rate above 100.

So if any of these symptoms develop or you soak through two pads or tampons in one hour for two hours a row, you must go to the ER for treatment to control this heavy bleeding.

Till then, the following treatment measures are recommended for you now:

-You can take a tab. Ibuprofen 400mg 08 hourly. It is available at your pharmacy as OTC (over the counter) without a prescription and should help immensely. It can decrease bleeding by 20-40%.

This works by blocking chemicals known as prostaglandins, which are associated with abnormal menstrual bleeds.

-Apply heat as a warm washcloth to the area for 10 minutes or so 2 or 3 times a day to increase blood flow to the site and subside the inflammation and pain/cramps.

-Also, ensure you take iron supplements and iron-rich foods to make up for your daily iron needs.
