Hi-I'm wondering about some unusual cramping I'm having

Doctor's Assistant: Have you seen a doctor about this yet? What medications are you taking?

No, I'm not sure if I need to go in or not. I have an IUD and it's difficult to tell the difference between normal cramping and something I should be concerned about I've had an ectopic pregnancy and that's mainly why I'm concerned but my period just ended so I'm not sure if it's still cramping related to my cycle

Doctor's Assistant: Are you in any pain? How regular are your periods?

My periods are regular. I'm not in pain now but have woken up out of sleep the last couple of nights with cramping which is unusual for me

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

No I don't believe so

So as I understand your question, your concerns are two-fold. The cramps and possible ectopic pregnancy. Since you have just completed your period, you are not pregnant. An Ectopic pregnancy does not cause any symptoms until 7-8 weeks (when the fetus is large enough to cause pressure/cramping). Your cramps may be related to your IUD and the end of your period and this is most likely why you are having cramping. The other possibility is that you have the beginning of an infection and you will get a discharge shortly. Any possibility of infection?

Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I don't have any discharge yet and I have the same partner so I don't think it could be an STI but possibly another type of infection
OB GYN Doctor: Dr Stan, Doctor replied 1 month ago

The chance of infection is slim and I only mention it if there was a chance of a sexually transmitted infection such as Herpes, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia. Your cramps are most likely due to your IUD and period. Please try over the counter Advil or Aleve and if they persist, then a visit to your GYN for possible Ultrasound to evaluate for ovarian cyst (which also is possible, but unlikely).

I hope I have addressed your concerns. Have I?

Thank you for allowing me to provide assistance.
