The average age of menopause in this country (when our periods naturally go away) is 51. In the years preceding menopause, as our hormones gradually start to decline, our periods can be come very irregular. And they can become irregular in any which way - some people experience bleeding and spotting all the time, or periods can become very spaced out, or periods can become very frequent.

It is most likely that the abnormal bleeding you are experiencing is the "perimenopausal" hormonal changes that are occurring. It's hard to predict whether this is just a one-time event or the irregularities will continue for a few weeks, months or even years.
