Customer Question

I have a question regarding my current pregnancy. Throughout the course of my pregnancy I have consumed a few medium rare steaks, not knowing they posed a risk for toxo. I have been giving myself terrible anxiety over this. Is this a reason to ask to be tested?

I have a few more questions to ask, is that ok?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Of course
Expert:  Doctor John MD replied 1 month ago.

How far along in the pregnancy were you when you ate the steaks?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
between 12-16 weeks.
Expert:  Doctor John MD replied 1 month ago.

its very, very unlikely that the steak was:

infected with toxoplasmosis AND even if infected, that you would contract it from a medium rare steak.

Expert:  Doctor John MD replied 1 month ago.

you would have a higher risk of toxo from cleaning out cat litter box, since that is most common risk

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I do have cats, both indoor. My current physician was informed of this during my initial visit with her but she did not recommend a blood test for toxoplasmosis so I'm unsure if she would run the test now if I asked. At my 20 week scan there were not abnormalities found. I just want to ease my mind about having potentially put myself at risk.

There is a blood panel called a TORCH test that is done in pregnancy and it tests for toxoplasmosis and other diseases such as german measles, CMV and herpes virus. Its usually done only if the woman has symptoms because these infections are uncommon in the U.S.

Again, highly unlikely you contracted toxoplasmosis from medium rare steaks that would then pass onto your baby, but if you want reassurance, you can speak to your ob/gyn about ordered that test.

Does that help answer your question and concerns?

Expert:  Doctor John MD replied 1 month ago.

Here is some information from Medscape on how rare congenital toxoplasmosis is in the U.S.
The article states only about 400 child born in the US every year (out of 4 million births every year)
