Norm, For the past three months, my periods have been as

Customer Question

Hi Norm,For the past three months, my periods have been as follows:3 months ago: Normal flow, but only 3 days
2 months ago: Normal flow, but only 1.5 days
Most recent period: Light flow, only 1.5 days (I basically only needed a panty liner)I am not pregnant, but my husband and I are thinking about trying this summer.A little bit about me: I was diagnosed with mild PCOS about 5 years ago, as my periods were 40-45 days apart and erratic. After some dietary changes (mostly with carbs) - I lost about 20 pounds and for the last 2 years my periods have settled into a 32-35 range and are very regular otherwise. I am at a normal weight/BMI.My period usually lasts 5 days, with the first 1-2 days being heavy and then tapering out for the remaining 2-3.I had my bloodwork checked recently (on day 2 of my most recent cycle):TSH: 2.12 mU/L
FSH: 4.3 IU/L
LH: 2.8 IU/L
Prolactin: 9.2 ug/L
Estradiol: 59 pmol/L
Progesterone: 0.6 nmol/L
DHEA Sulphate: 4.8 umol/L
Testosterone: 0.7 nmol/LMy biggest concern is with my Estradiol level - does that seem very low? I checked my past day 3 levels and they were as follows:June 21, 2013: 156 pmol/L
Jan 5, 2016: 107 pmol/L
July 2, 2016: 92 pmol/L
May 10, 2017: 59 pmol/LI do get changes in my cervical mucous including egg white stretchy discharge when I think I am ovulating, as well as PMS symptoms before my period (acne, constipation, bloating, tender breasts).I apologize for the long message, but I'm trying to give you all the background information. I'm concerned about my short periods and my low estrogen, especially as my husband and I are looking to start trying to conceive.Thank you!

Hi, thank you for choosing Justanswer. I'm Dr Ted Manos M.D., obgyn. I see Dr Norm has not responded. Your serum estradiol level should be low at day three and FSH low getting ready to start cooking. Your previous estradiols were a little high for day 3 consistent with mild PCOS. You can try to conceive or have a check up with an ultrasound close to mid cycle. Thanks again for using Justanswer.

Hi Dr. Ted!Thanks for the reply. I'm in Canada so the units are different. I've converted the day 3 estradiol to US measurements:June 21, 2013: 42 pg/ml
Jan 5, 2016: 29 pg/ml
July 2, 2016: 25 pg/ml
May 10, 2017: 16 pg/mlDoesn't this seem low?Thank you!

The estradiol level at day 3 doesn't mean much at your age. All that matters is ovulation and the best test for that is a positive pregnancy test. If you don't get pregnant then you would need fine tuning of your cycle.
