I've had regular periods a year, but I've had two periods

Customer Question

I've had regular periods for over a year, but I've had two periods that arrived in three weeks, not four, and I've been having heavy, brown, irregular spotting every day in between the periods. What does this mean?

Here's some more info. that might help: I arrived in Spain a month ago, I'm a study abroad student. I haven't been feeling very stressed out, I've been having a really good time, adjusting very well, but the irregular periods and heavy spotting started when I arrived in Spain. Would this have any affect on my cycle/uterine health?

This is Dr. David

travel and increased stress can cause irregular periods.

eating new foods and being in a new environment with new people can cause irregular periods.

brown blood tends to be old blood coming out of the uterus.

your periods should level out and become more regular when you settle down in Spain

if you continue to have irregular periods, you should see a gyn doctor and see if going on a birth control pill regimen can help you

let me know if you have questions.
