This answer was rated:

effects of xanax on unborn child

the category of medication that xanax falls into is category D and is due to an 'association' with clefting of the lip and palate.

is this side effect of clefting with use of xanax throughout the whole pregnancy or even if mother only used in first trimester?

this is something that is most likely to happen in the first trimester. Beyond that, with continued use, there may be dependency resulting in withdrawal symptoms after the baby is born.
