I have been taking a low dose antibiotic ( keflex) daily to prevent UTI's.( it is the only antibiotic that has helpe me with this issue) My doctor put me on this because I kept getting severe UTI's. I have interstitial cystitis which my doctor says likely contributes to the frequent UTI's I was getting. The keflex has helped greatly with reducing the amount of UTI's I get, in fact it is a life saver for me. My UTI's were so bad at one point I wanted to literally die from the pain. The keflex has been a huge help which is why my doctor wants me to stay on the low dose daily.
My problem now is that I am having some itching and irritation in the perinium area as well as the anal area. I had this about 7 months ago and was given diflucan which helped some, but I had a bad reaction to the diflucan and cannot take it again. I am pretty sure this is yeast related due to the antibiotic. I do however take strong doses(100billion) of probiotics( acidophilus and other probiotic strains) daily to prevent yeast issues, so I am not sure how I could even get a yeast infection. My gyne gave a script for nystatin and triminecelone cream the last time I was there to use for itching and irritation down there. I have not had any huge amount of vaginal discharge as of yet so I have not purchased any of the over the counter yeast creams(monistat etc.) I am afraid that by using these creams it will set me up or cause other infections like BV and UTI's. Do these creams cause infections like this? Also, I went to see a natural doctor and she told me that eating any form of sugar will make my yeast issues worse and that I should stop eating all forms of sugar( even fruit). My regular doctor said this is "snake oil" and that eating sugar does not cause yeast infections or worsen them. What is your take on this? I do not consume alot of sugar as it is. I do however eat at least 2 pieces of fresh fruit a day to help prevent constipation. what do you think about all this?

Hello, and I am pleased to help, use of my answers are for educational purposes only.
You have a few issues, and here is what I am recommending for you.
Stop the Keflex and replace with once daily Macrobid, this will not cause as much yeast infection and will cut down on the irritation.
You can use the nystatin or Terconazole cream instead of the diflucan along with the triamcinolone.
Plus, if you are not on Elmiron for the IC already, you should be.

I unfortunately cannot take macrobid, I had bad reations to this drug as well. The reason my doctor put me on the keflex is because this is the only one I can tolerate and that actually works. As far as elmiron, I have been on that in the past, it did not work for me and just gave me bad reactions. I have had the interstitial cystitis for for over 5 years and have exhausted all treatments. The keflex is actually the only thing that has helped me.

Do the terconazole and other yeast creams cause BV or UTI's? Also should I give up all sugar forms( fruit and carbs etc..)to prevent yeast issues or is this just a myth?

No, terconazole and the yeast creams do not cause BV, nor UTI's this has never been proven.
So, stay on the Keflex, but also stay on the Elmiron. And then also,use RepHresh PRO B pills and insert one in your vagina daily.
