My 13 year old daughter has been having periods every 20-21

Resolved Question:

My 13 year old daughter has been having periods every 20-21 days since the onset of her period in Oct. This seems a bit too often given that most periods are every 4 weeks. Is this normal?

Hello, I would be happy to assist. Frequently, when periods first start they are irregular since the proper hormone fluctuations have not matured. Usually within two years her regular pattern will form. However, it is normal to have a period every 21-35 days, so this could also be her normal pattern. If her bleeding is heavy, there would be concerns of anemia developing and I would recommend she take a vitamin and eat iron rich foods. She may also benefit from hormonal contraception simply to regulate her periods to every 28 days if her bleeding is heavy or too frequent. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask additional questions if necessary. Best wishes.
