Topic: Pregnancy/Gynecology. My last period was 5/24, last intercourse 5/30. My periods are usually always 8-10 days late and have a heavy-heavy-light pattern with some clotted blood. 7/10 I took a pregnancy test, which came up negative. 7/11 I had soft stomach cramps and began to spot. Today my stomach hurt more and I woke up very early just in time to discover I was bleeding more heavily. I took off from work because of my cramps. Midol didn''t help. A hot bath didn''t help. There''s more clotted blood than usual and the blood isn''t pooling in my pad (it''s usually soaked.) I laid down with a heating pad on my stomach, which gave me some relief, and when I woke up the bleeding was very light and brown. An hour later it is heavy again and bright red. It''s weird, but I have a very sensitive sense of smell, and I don''t smell like I usually do. I''ve never cramped all day like this, either. Could this be miscarriage? What else could it be? Just a deviant period?

You said that you periods are always 8-10 days late - Do you mean that your period are irregular or that your periods are more than the average 28-30 days between periods?

Reply to FamilyPhysician's Post: I mean that my period seem to be on a 38-40 day cycle rather than 28-30. I don't think they're irregular. (I don't know if that's normal or not, but nobody has ever said it was bad.)

OK, that helps.

Based on this, you are late based on the average length of your cycle. It is impossible to determine if this is a miscarriage without an examination and a BLOOD test for pregnancy. (Home pregnancy tests may not pick up an early pregnancy)

The combination of PAIN and bleeding when pregnancy is even a remote possibility raises concerns that this might be an ectopic pregnancy.

I would suggest getting examined in the ER tonight.
