My Mom has a 2013 Nissan Altima SV (2.5 Engine), 86k miles.
My Mom has a 2013 Nissan Altima SV (2.5 Engine), 86k miles. In June of 2017 she complained that it was stalling, sometimes it would stall right after starting while it was idling, sometimes after you put in reverse, sometimes at stop light it would stall. But after a bit it would not stall anymore. Someone said it might be the battery, so I changed it. Immediately after I changed it (in the Advance Auto Parts parking lot) it would start and then die within seconds, took like 10 tries to get it to stay running. I then started to think she got some bad gas, so I bought some additive (don't remember what), put premium in and drove for a bit and it seemed good, next day was okay too. So I gave her the car back. Over next few months she told me it was still stalling, but not much, on occasion, but would always restart easily and go. Fast forward to November 2018, battery I put in 17 months ago is completely dead, can't get it to jump start and keep car running, take to Advance and they confirm dead, New battery (under warranty). After that Car continues to stall occasionally. Fast forward to Monday Nov 25th 2019. Mom calls me from Home Depot parking lot, car dead, wont start. (she was in the middle of an aisle driving when it died). Tried to restart and car keeps stalling, killed battery. I go rescue her. Push car into vacant spot and jump it and drive it home. She also tells me car hasn't stalled in about a month before today. Wednesday, Nov 27th, she goes for short trip and comes home, all okay. Thursday (Thanksgiving), she calls me and says she started car, went back into house to get some stuff, came out and it was stalled. Won't stay started. Dies every time after seconds. Kills battery. I go get her. Friday, Nov 29th, I go over and jump start the car, fires right up and stays started. I am starting to suspect the alternator. I put my multimeter on the battery with car off, shows 12.6, I start car, it shows 13.9. All seems good. I rig up my multimeter so I can see it while sitting in drivers seat. I start car and the meter starts at 12.8 and drops down to 12.1 over 30 seconds and then goes back to 12.8 and stays there. Weird. I think the alternator is bad. I shut car off. I restart, meter hovers between 13.9 and 14.0. I restart car 50 more times over the next two hours. Meter always between 13.9 and 14.0. So intermittent alternator problem? The next day, Saturday, Nov 30th. I go over and put multimeter on car, start it up, meter starts at 12.9 drops down to 12.1 and then goes back up to 12.8 and stays there. I shut the car off. Try to restart, won't restart. It runs for seconds and dies. I try to restart until I drain the battery. Each try the multimeter shows 14.0 for the 1 second it is running. I kill the battery. I put my jumper cables on it and fires up and stays started. I decide to get an alternator. I changed an alternator on a 2002 Altima once and was right up on top and was easy to change. I look at this one and it is same place and I think it will be easy. I get alternator. I start to take off the old one and realize the second bolt is a lot tougher to get to than the 2002. And the belt is partially blocking the bolt. I realize I can't do it easily, in the parking lot of her condo complex. I have to try this at my house. I had already taken the top bolt out and removed the cables, so I reassemble. I get in and start with multimeter on and it shows 14.3. It has never been that high in all my tests. Did removing the cables and pins and reseating them fix something? I let the car idle and am watching multimeter, still showing 14.3, then after about 2 minutes, the engine quits. UGHHHHH! Maybe it is not the alternator.… read more
