P1283 idle select signal invalid

Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the car? What size is the engine?

158K 4.0L added a K&N cold air intake full mod, not just filter assuming it's something to do with that

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model/year of your Nissan?

2005 Xterra Offroad

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Xterra yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes, and just read the code last night, and started researching this morning, so haven't tried anything yet...

Good morning,

Normally we see the p1283 code when there is an exhaust leak. You haven't heard any popping or ticking from the exhaust system right?

Here are the steps I would take for diagnosing this one:

1. To manually clear the self-learning data without a scan tool: Start the engine and get it warmed up to normal operating temperature. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Disconnect the Mass Air Flow Sensor connector. Restart the engine and let it idle for at least 3 seconds. Turn the ignition switch OFF and reconnect the Mass Air Flow Sensor connector. Turn the key ON and check codes (there should be a Mass Air Flow Sensor code P0102). Clear codes. Start the engine and let it idle for at least 10 minutes.

2. If you have a scan tool - monitor both air fuel ratio sensor voltages to be fluctuating around 1.5 volts. Compare the bank two to bank one.

3. Smoke test the exhaust for pinhole leaks.

Typically the exhaust leak is from a cracked exhaust flange on this model.

Had a fuel level sensor code for months, finally found time to replace fuel sending unit, have Bully Dog performance tuner , read codes, was only expecting the fuel code, P0463, but got a P1283. Reset codes with Bully Dog, P1283 came back, P0463 stayed gone, 2weeks ago added CAI full unit, from K&N, I'm assuming that is the trigger, I did find that reset procedure, and was going to try it
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
I have not remapped the engine with the Bully Dog as of yet, making sure codes are clean before I do

I'm at work and not near the vehicle right now, so I can't talk

I will try the reset procedure as soon as I can, and go from there, I don't want to put the original intake back on, as I do actually feel the performance gains I want, side note: previous owner installed a MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust as well. Just figured that might be important since it changes the exhaust flow.
Nissan Mechanic: Jared D, ASE Certified Technician replied 2 months ago

The flow might affect it- maybe the added exahust flow coupled with the better intake flow are both just throwing the computer off. See how the reset does.

If it doesn't help then I would look at the AF ratio voltages on the scan tool. If they are vastly different from one another I would change the one that fluctuates more (or both- it's usually a good idea to change them in pairs).
