Do you have a scan tool to check for malfunction codes. This may help located a possible bad connection on one of the sensors.
Check the grounds on the intake manifold.
Check this then get back to me .

I didn't get your response till yesterday. I went ahead and took my vehicle to a mechanic. He said he's "99% sure" it's my timing belt. I just had my timing belt replace this year. He wants to charge me $800 to fix it. What would be the possibility I could use the current timing belt and just try to correct this issue myself? And is it possible I messed up my timing belt when I put my distributor back in wrong when I changed my valve cover gaskets?
Nissan Mechanic: Greg, import technician replied 8 months ago
This is a 2004 Xterra 4.0 L

If timing belt was replaced this year then it should still be good if not contaminated with oil .
If the tensioner failed then may have jumped a tooth . I think the tech may be right about the timing but more likely to be the distributor is out of timing if you had it removed .
If you are 100% sure belt was correctly fitted could be the distributor timing mark is out .
Let’s say the belt is out of timing then all that needs doing is retime thebelt and ignition with out replacing any parts if none damaged or contaminated.
Need further advice with this issue then please get back to me.

Make sure you let him know all parts are new this year as timing belt kit is good for 60.000 miles or 7 years .
