I took off the positive battery pole wires to clean

Customer Question
I took off the...

I took off the positive battery pole wires to clean them...after replacing them my 1997 Nissan XE turns over and over but will not start. It's almost like I\'m trying to crack the truck with a valet key. I can't find a second hand alarm system which I was told may be the problem.

Mechanic's Assistant: Can you turn the steering wheel at all? And what about the key? Is it worn or damaged?

Yes I can turn the steering wheel....New key...It acts like it out of gas. I took a spark plug wire off one of the plugs and put in a new plug and grounded it and I'm not getting any spark? I've had the alternator and distributor replaced.

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model of your '97 Nissan?

Truck XE

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?

I have it at my mechanic's shop and he's tried everything..One day it was running like always (230K miles) the next day after I messed with the battery post wires it will not start...just turns over and over...So far the mechanic has tested the wiring harness and says he continuity, put on a new alternator and distributor and a crack shaft sensor (?) I believe

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Not really...

HI,

Ok, based upon the symptoms, I suspect the ECM got fried. You or your mechanic needs to test the wires at the ecm that go to the coil, power transistor and cam and crank sensors for power while key in cranking mode. If any are absent, the ecm needs to be replaced.

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
he has checked the ecm and it is good

Nissan Mechanic: david craig, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 months ago

ok, I have an appointment at the va at 1. I have to get going. but I think if the fusible link is good, you are looking at a cam sensor problem, in which case I would just replace the distributor. Ill check back in when I get back, should be around 2.

no luck with finding bad fuses...It just seems so unusual that I took off the positive battery pole wires three weeks ago and replaced them after cleaning off very little corrosion and now it will not start up...new alternator, distributor (even put the old one back on and tried) The mechanic says he has checked the positive pole wiring harness but I got to think that there is a broken wire in there somewhere. What about the ignition switch wiring? Heck I don't know. I'm just history teacher!!!!
Nissan Mechanic: david craig, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 months ago

if it was starting before you disconnected the battery, its not a broken wire.

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
that is correct.... I did have a few days when I was driving it and it would just completely shut down...I would coast over to the side of the road and then crank it up again. It would start back up and run for maybe 30 minutes or three minutes. That is why the mechanic (who I trust and has always done my car work) decided it needed a new alternator. After the new alternator it would run find again for a while and then shut down. And when I say shut down it was like I was driving along and all the of sudden it went completely dead. No skipping no shaking no indication..just dead. Then I would crank it up and drive. after a few days of that I took it back and he put on the new distributor. He thought that would solve the problem. But again it kept shutting down. Someone told me to check my battery pole connections so I did. Didn't find any real problem so I put them back on. Since that day I can't get it to crank up....it just turns over and over...
Nissan Mechanic: david craig, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 months ago

what is the battery voltage as it sits right now?

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
let me go check..give me a few minutes..I know the mechanic (Bob) has put the charger on it several times since we grind on it often hoping for it to start..
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
the reason I mentioned the breakage in the wiring, I thought maybe I twisted it some way when I put it back on..
Nissan Mechanic: david craig, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 months ago

when you put the cables back on?

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Nissan Mechanic: david craig, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 months ago

ok, i need toi know the battery voltage without a charger on it.

When I reattached the cable wires I thought I might have twisted them just enough to break a wire inside the casing

Hey there, Nissan expert here.At this point the cam sensor signal from the distributor and crank sensor signal need to be scoped. If both signals look good and timing is on then the ECM ground driver has failed.
