Customer Question
My Nissan won't start...

My Nissan won't start. Brand new battery. Locked and unlocked the car a few times to reset and that didn't work. The break lights work. Not sure what to do. I live on an Island. No Nissan dealer here.

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the brake fluid? How's the level and when was it last changed?

It was changed a month ago.

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model/year of your Nissan?

Nissan murano 2010

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Murano yourself? What have you tried so far?

I checked the new battery which is fine. I checked to see if the brake lights worked and they do. Ive pumped the brakes and tried to reset by using the remote to lock and unlock the car a few times.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Where do I look for the security light on the dash?

Do you hear a click or anything when you try to start it?

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
No click
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I dont want to pay extra for a call thank you
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Ok, this issue is more then likely with the pnp switch. If it doesn't know it's in park or neutral then it won't try to start. Try putting it into neutral and see if it will at least click, if not, back up into park.

No worries on the call, that's the site prompting you, not me.

Let me know.

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I did try starting it in neutral then back in park
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Ok, give me a couple minutes to pull up the wiring diagram.

You don't have a security light on when you try to start it do you?

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Where do I look for that light on the dash?
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Since it's the keyless system, it should be a light on the dash or up on the dash near the windshield. This light normally will blink when you have the remote away from the car, even if it's not locked. It might be right in the tach on the dash as well.

Customer reply replied 11 months ago
ok. I will be right back.

No security light that I could see
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
when I shut the car and stepped away with the key..there was no visible light on the dash anywhere
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Ok, what I am seeing in the wiring diagram is 2 possible fuses in the fuse box by the battery. They are fuses #51 and 52. The problem is I don't have a diagram of this box, Nissan didn't include it in the service manual and I don't think yours are numbered. If you have a test light you could check them that way. There should be a theft deterrent light somewhere on there blinking when you are away from it with the key. I'll see if I can find it's location for you.

I do
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Ok, did you get the link I sent you?

Customer reply replied 11 months ago
It's on the inside on the top by the windshield wiper?
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Yep, up by the defrost grid on the driver side.

Customer reply replied 11 months ago
ok. let me look again.
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Sounds good, I will be here

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
it does flash
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Ok, we have to make sure its going out when you attempt to start this. If it's staying on, then it means it's being immobilized by the anti theft and you fob will need reprogramming. If it's going off, then we need a test light to check some of these other items that could be causing this.

Let me know what you would like to do

Customer reply replied 11 months ago
ok. I will see if the light is on or off when I try to start the car. I will be right back again

The light did go out when I tried to start the car
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Ok, that eliminates that. Do you have a test light so we can check a couple other items here?

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I do have a test light.
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Have you tried the mechanical key as well?

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I do not have a mechanical key
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Im starting to panic. I had the car totally checked out a month ago before leaving it on the island for the summer.
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
There are no Nissan car dealers here on Martha's Vineyard.
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Don't panic yet, I want to make sure you don't have a mechanical key in the key fob? Most of these did, of course that doesn't mean you do, but I want to make sure. On the back side of the fob you can remove it.

Also, do you have anything showing on the dash. Where the tach is? A key symbol?

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
What do you know. there is a mechanical key in there. Im going to try it. I'll be right back
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Thanks :)

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I used the key in the door and locked and unlocked it from the door. Then I tried to start the car with the key in the door and not in the door. It still didn't start. Was there something else I was supposed to do with the key?
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
It only goes to the outside door right?
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I lost you. I'm back now.
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I have inserted the whole fob as well
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Ok, I am going to have to ask you to check the fuses with your test light in the fuse box under the hood.

Like I said i don't think yours are numbered, but if they are it's #51 and 52. If one is blown the car won't try to start.

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I tried to open the area where the fuses are. It's under the hood in the back. Does it open from the front up or the back up? they both have latches but I couldn't seem to lift it off.
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
In the back far right if I am correct?
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

It's tight in there, This box should be next to the battery, behind it a bit, but on the driver side.

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I had the right place then. How do I open it to get under it to the fuses?
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

You have to pull the latches and it should pull straight up. They are pretty tight but that's how it's done.

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
OK. I will try to open it. Will you still be here when I am done?
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Heading out now to try then
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Should be, I usually work until at least 6 on Saturday, then off tomorrow and pretty much all day 7-7 the rest of the week

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I have no idea which are 51 and 52. And do I just pull the fuses straight out with my hand?
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I'm reading the manual. I may have a fuse puller outer in my glove compartment.
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

I would use the test light to check them. As you go along, probe both sides for power. Then pull out the ones that dont have power and make sure they aren't blown. You'll need pliers or the fuse puller.

You're welcome!

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
any idea which side the fuses I should check are on? there are some on the left top corner in a small rectangle then the large rectangle with quite a few.
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Probably the larger one. Nissan is messed up. Some of the manuals have a diagram of this fuse box with the numbers, some don't. Sadly they didn't supply that info for us.

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I checked my manual. No diagram listing the fuses and what they go to.
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I'm headed back out to just try a few then
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

This is why a test light will make it faster to check instead of pulling each one out of there

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I'm screwed. I pulled out one of the larger fuses and dropped it into the abiss
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
The other ones I pulled out and returned were fine.
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

These all should only be regular blade type of fuses.

Ask Your Own Nissan Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Some are large and rectangular. I pulled out one of those as well as the small ones.
Nissan Mechanic: Mike V., Nissan Technician replied 11 months ago

Ok, I'm sorry, but I am going to have to open this back up. I was looking at the wiring diagram for the starter and I can't figure it out. They changed substantially from my time at Nissan. It is showing the BCM and TCM in the wiring mix, which still makes me feel like the issue is with the shifter park/neutral switch. But I can't confirm it with the diagram.

When I open this up, the other experts will see it and be able to help you out. Please don't reply or rate me as it will lock it back to me and no one else will see it and be able to help you.

Hello my name is ***** ***** thank you for your question.

If you don't step on the brake pedal and push the start button two times. Does the ignition turn on? Meaning all the warning lights? or do you have a Yellow key light?
