I've got an '04 Maxima that hard shifts during city driving

Customer Question

I've got an '04 Maxima that hard shifts during city driving sometimes. It feels like it goes into neutral and then slams into the next gear, lurching the car forward.
JA: How old is the transmission? Have you noticed any leaking?
Customer: The transmission is original. No leaks. The people I got it from are psychotic about any oil leaks, and the fluid is staying at the appropriate level. My husband and I drive with purpose and the previous owner drove like a grandma, if that's of relevance.
JA: Are you fixing your Maxima yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I haven't done anything to it. It does the slamming about once every day or two, usually twice in a row, once on the downshift and then again on the upshift. Generally slowing down for a red light, then taking off.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I can't think of anything else.

this can be cause by a cam sensor that is going bad. have you had the car scan for codes ?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
The other owner did. He followed the scheduled maintenance to a T. Had it done at the Nissan dealership here in Texarkana.

did you get the car scan for codes ?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
I have not since the check engine light is not on.
Expert:  Clifton B. replied 10 months ago.

there can still be a code even if the light is not on , the ecm need to see two trips in a row with the problem for the light to come on if this only happens one time per day the ecm can still store a code but do not turn the light on because it did not see the problem in two trips .

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
I didn't know that! So do I just need to take it by a parts store to get the codes read?
Expert:  Clifton B. replied 10 months ago.

yes you most likely have a bad cam sensor but there are two fo them so you will need the code
