Airbag light on permanently. Failed UK MOT. Nissan dealer

Customer Question

Airbag light on permanently. Failed UK MOT. Nissan dealer says 'module' is faulty. Repair is 650 quid. Is there a cheaper option?
JA: Is anything interfering with the seatbelt latch?
Customer: I don't know. I could check - car is currently at the garage. Do you mean is a coin trapped down the latch or something?
JA: What is the model/year of your Nissan?
Customer: Micra 2006
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Nothing - tried my local garage - he said should go to main dealer.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: Can i switch off the light just to pass the MOT?

Hi there,

If the Nissan dealer says the module is faulty, then that is what you need.

Disabling the SRS warning lamp is not an option, and will not pass MOT.

The other part of the question - is there a cheaper option than paying 650 quid to a Nissan approved garage?
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

If you can find a module second hand, it would be cheaper.

Still needs to fitted by Nissan, loop resistance data checked etc.

The hard part is finding the same model in a wreckers yard, where no airbags have been deployed.

650 is certainly not cheap, might be no other way for you.

Also, if the light is off it passes its MOT. Is there a way to just switch off the light?

Finally, what's the SRS module called so that I can start searching for one please.
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

Some call them the air bag ecu, or SRS ECU, or SRS module.

Here is one for example, sorry not in stock at the moment.

I hope this helps you.

Gary,
I've removed the old module and sent it for repair. It should be back tomorrow. I'll replace it myself and see whether the dashboard solid on light goes out. Then I have to deal with the cat converter problem Nissan said I have (engine light is on orange), though the MOT passed emissions test. I havn't even started on that one. Any hints would be useful.
I'll let you know and rate when I've got the module replaced and light off. Thanks for your help todate.
Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe,

That sounds promising for the SRS module.

I would scan the engine for codes.

Strange for Nissan to say you need a cat if it passed emissions testing.
