How can I obtain the actual transmission fluid temperature

How can I obtain the actual transmission fluid temperature on my 2012 Nissan Armada? I have a gauge on the dashboard but that doesn't tell me the actual temperature. FSM says to use CONSULT III and read ATF TEMP 1. I don't have the CONSULT III, very expensive. Will a live data OBD2 scanner tool be able to read the ATF TEMP 1 value from the sensor?

HI,

Some scan tools will it is a full function one such as the Snap-Solus or comparable one. Another alternator would be to take for a test drive and then use an infra-red thermometer to read the temperature at the transmission bottom fluid pan with it idling. That will be accurate within 1-2 degrees and you can get an infra-red thermometer for under $50
