Tokyo_GI_Joe :

Usually an engine has either a map sensor or a maf sensor but seldom both. On this engine I see a maf sensor and a map/baro switch solenoid valve.

Tokyo_GI_Joe :

Actually from reading this it appears you may have both.

MAF Sensor Strategy

The MAF Sensor provides a linear input signal (See Figure 1) to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for a number of engine control system calculations. The MAF signal is compared with Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP), Intake Air Temperature (IAT), Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT), and Fuel Trim (HO2S) in order to determine the correct air–fuel mixture for measured operating conditions.

ECT Sensor Strategy

The ECT Sensor provides a linear input signal (See Figure 1) to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for a number of engine control system calculations. The ECT signal is compared with Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP), Mass Air Flow (MAF), Intake Air Temperature (IAT), and Fuel Trim (HO2S) in order to determine the correct air–fuel mixture for measured operating conditions. In some cases the ECT Sensor input is used in concert with the A/C Pressure (ACP) Sensor input in order to determine cooling fan and A/C system operation.

Tokyo_GI_Joe :

Autozone lists one, so I assume there is one.

For your 2000 Nissan/Datsun Truck Frontier Pickup 2WD 2.4L SFI 4cyl

Tokyo_GI_Joe :

Labor time manual says .3 hours to replace or 18 minutes. They are calling it an Barometric Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor.

Tokyo_GI_Joe :

EGR labor is .8 hours or 48 minutes. Autozone lists that for $126.99

Customer:

Thanks. It looks fairly easy to replace these items. A couple screws/bolts for each, a gasket, a wire harness connector, and a couple hose clamps. For this the dealer wanted $1200???

Customer:

If you have any tips, they would be appreciated. I have lots of tools and am fairly handy, but it has been a long time since I have done much auto work myself ... just too complicated. My little truck has given me 246,000 almost trouble free miles, but is barely running now. I have already replaced the MAF sensor and PCV valve because that is what the service agent TOLD me needed to be replaced. (The truck barely runs, dies when RPM gets above about 2500, and has NO power). After replacing the $400 MAF and $15 PCV, it ran no better. That is when I looked at the WRITTEN receipt from the dealer and noticed that the PRINTED instructions said I needed a new MAP sensor and EGR valve. Thus my call to the expert. Again, thank you and feel free to give me any additional advice. I am accepting your reply as a satisfied customer.

Tips? Let me tell you one thing. The dealer is going to use the ,most expensive part and might even mark up the price as much as 100%, plus labor of who knows $90 an hour.

Were there any codes that someone retrieved from the computer?

Ok, I found a dealer egr here for $150.

http://www.oemnissanparts.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getJointLocator&siteid=216018

I didn't find a map sensor there but autozone has a map sensor for $115 and an egr for $126.

I had the labor times at 0.3 and 0.8 for a total of 1.1 hours. Even if the dealer did markup the price 100% and charged $100 an hour it should only be $482 for parts and $110 for labor or $592 total. Why they want twice as much is beyond me.

Yeah, do it yourself with aftermarket parts and save almost $1,000.
