You can apply for New Zealand citizenship by grant if:
- you have been living as a resident here for at least the last 5 years
- you intend to keep living here
- you speak basic English, and
- you are of good character
- The problem you will face is that your five years will be interrupted by the six months in Australia. You also need to show a commitment to New Zealand, and you may find that leaving for six months would mean that your application would need to be postponed. Generally, if you want to apply for citizenship you should live here permanently, although leaving for holidays is fine
