There are a number of options for borrowing money, which are limited of course because of their age. Sometimes banks will not lend money to older people because the term of the loan is more than their life expectancy. More importantly however, if there are only income is a pension, then they may not be able to borrow money as they cannot repay. It is a requirement for banks lending money that they have to be satisfied that the borrower does actually have the income to pay any mortgage. In this situation there are mortgages called "reverse equity mortgages" there are a number of banks which offer these including Heartland which has a site here https://www.seniorsfinance.co.nz/
