My wife, child, dogs, and I are moving to New Zealand in July. While we planned to go on a 9-12 month visitor visa and look for work while there, last night I received a 12-week Filmmaker-In-Residency job offer from a university in Palmerston North, NZ. If I take this position, I'm required to have a work visa, naturally.
Months ago, I filled out the information for my Expression of Interest for the Skilled Migrant/Residency Visa, but I have yet to submit. With this job offer, I have 140 points toward that visa, but after those 12 weeks, I don’t want to be deported, and that's where my question comes in:
If I get the Skilled Migrant Visa, how long do I have to find a new job after my 12 weeks at the university end? A week? 3 months? Indefinite since it's "for residency?" I can't find a definite answer anywhere.
I could turn down the job, still go on a vistor visa and live while looking for different work, but it’s a great opportunity there at the university.
The university needs an answer today, and I don't know whether to take the position and risk deportation after this one job is complete. Or refuse the offer, go on a visitor visa, and try to find a more permanent job in the 9-12 months provided by the visitor visa. Our end goal is residency, and any advice you can give would be helpful.
