We have a rental property in New Zealand, a cottage beside a 50-year old pine plantation. 200 trees are within falling distance of the cottage and are are threatening to do so. The land is a very steep slope and it will not be possible to harvest the timber for sale due to the difficulty of access. The trees were planted by others before we purchased the property, 40 years ago, and have never been considered by us to have commercial value. We have never claimed any expenses related to the trees in the past. The only reason for dropping the trees is to ensure the safety and continued use of the cottage. If the work is not done then we will have to stop renting the cottage. We have a quote from a contractor for $50,000 to drop the trees safely.
