was hoping to actually speak to someone. Hard to convey the issues and get answers this way but i'll try! Hope I dont bore you. so just had an email from my landlord saying he is putting the rent up in early January from $450 to $485. This is a 2 bedroom unit and at the moment I am the only tenant as I cannot rent the other bedroom as there is a mouldy smell in the room. Not long ago i had a leaking toilet that he would not address with a plumber until the people renting next to me complained about leaks coming down into their areas. Finally he got a plumber but now there is a mouldy smell outside the toilet and in the spare room next to the toilet. Obviously there is mould under the carpet in this area. Hence not being able to rent the other room and i am paying rent on my own which is very hard let alone putting the rent up $35 a week.. There are numerous issues like cannot use the cold tap in the bathroom vanity and the hot leaking all the time. Kitchen window joinery so rusted that one latch has corroded off and cannot use, the other not far away. Ventian blind in kitchen disintergrating, filthy cannot clean as it just breaks. Carpets and lino stained and disgusting. Had bed bugs arrive last summer and lost my bed and bedding. He was told by the pest control people to rip up the carpet an replace but he didn't. Now breeding season have had the odd one turn up again, worried as I cannot afford to replace my bed and bedding again for it just to happen again. The carpet and lino are in a disgusting condition and were when I moved in but I was thankful for a place at the time in a good area. There are lots other issues i will not bore you with but basically I feel if he wants to put the rent up he needs to do some major maintenance on this property so I can rent the spare room and halve my rent. To find somewhere else to rent in this market is not going to be easy at all and he knows that obviously. what are my rights? Also he emailed me about this increase should it not of been in writing with his signature? … read more
