I am a 52yr old self employed 'Accounts Lady'. I have worked part time (3 days/week)for the same firm for the last 8 years. I charge an hourly rate for the hours worked, issuing an invoice on a monthly basis. I usually work about 20 flexible hours per week: hours and days to suit, all dependent on dates (eg. PAYE by 20th, Invoices at beginnning of month, debtor collection etc). This has enabled me to come and go, enjoy holidays with family etal. On Wednesday last week, I was called in to a meeting at 4.45pm with my 2 bosses, and was told that 'they would like to sever my employment and when would I like to go?' (the implication was clearly 'then or as soon as'). They gave me no real reason for their decision (flippantly said perhaps someone younger and more qualified?), and like a dummy I accepted their decision without fight, tidied my desk, wrote a list of what needed doing and caught the bus home. My husband and I were to spend the long weekend in Melbourne and as it was all organised, we went, returning late last night. With a bit of time, some discussion and the benefit of hind-sight, I would like to know exactly what rights the self employed person has with regard to this type of dismissal? Many thanks. DMC
